00300	Dear Mr. Di Bonaventura,
00400
00500 I have enclosed several examples of my computer music printing system. The
00600
00700	two completed "publications" are the SIX BAGATELLES and the TWO MOTETS. The
00800
00900	Bagatelles were printed only six weeks after I began work on this system. The first steps,
01000
01100	in 1971, were misleadingly simple. I was in Europe for most of 1972 so I made
01200
01300	little progress until the late fall of that year. The Motets do not please me in the visual
01400
01500	sense, poor clefs, etc. At that time I was concentrating on the problems of creating larger
01600
01700	braces of score and the semi-automatic positioning of the vocal text. My main concerns
01800
01900	up to this time have been to create a flexible editing system. I feel I have largely succeeded in
02000
02100	this but the complexity of the problem has surpised me.
02200
02300 Recently I have been concentrating more on the appearance of my output. I think you will
02400
02500	note a great improvement in the two parts from my TRIO for WOODWINDS. (I wanted
02600
02700	to send you the complete Trio but I had a hang-up on the title page. I'll send it as soon as
02800
02900	it is ready.) With the Trio, each player will have a full score, but with his own part
03000
03100	about two times larger than the other two parts. This should greatly facilitate
03200
03300	rehearsals. With my system only a size factor for the staff involved need be changed
03400
03500	in order to change the size of a complete line. There are very many features of this
03600
03700	sort in this program.
03800
03900 I have included three pages of Xerox output of the Clarinet part to the
04000
04100	Trio. This particular Xerox machine is hooked directly to the computer. I use this mainly
04200
04300	for getting copy to take home for liesurely proof-reading. The sheet labeled "A"
04400
04500	first gives an example of a line from the Clarinet part. In the middle is the same line
04600
04700	but with the other parts reduced to a practical minimum. The lowest line then
04800
04900	has the last measure deleted and the remaining music expanded to fill the space. This
05000
05100	kind of change is done in seconds.
05200
05300 The "B" sheet shows my first attempts at using more conventional type
05400
05500	fonts for the numbers and letters. Up to this time I have been using minimal data
05600
05700	for my alphabet and numbers. I have now available in the program the possibility
05800
05900	of using the many fonts we have in our text printing system.
06000
06100 I will be in New York on the 27th and 28th of June and could meet with you at any
06200
06300	time on those days. Perhaps we could make a firm appointment. Meanwhile if you have
06325
06350	any immediate questions I would be glad to try to answer them by mail.
06600
06700
06800
06900 Very sincerely,
07000
07100
